Halifax, Nova Scotia – Four wines received the 2018 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Nova Scotia Wines at a ceremony at Government House in Halifax, on July 19, 2018.

The award, established by former Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant in 2014, recognizes the exceptional quality of locally sourced and produced wines, and honours the dedication and craft of those in Nova Scotia’s wine industry.

Through blind tastings an independent panel of 12 experts chose the following wines, listed in alphabetical order, as the best among the wines submitted:

“Once again, the wineries in Nova Scotia have demonstrated that this province can produce high-caliber wines that can match other wines from around Canada and they do us proud,” said Lt.-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc. “Over the years, I have been impressed with how the industry has advanced in our province and I offer my sincere thanks to the wineries who submitted their wines for judging and I extend my congratulations to the winners.”

Winery Association of Nova Scotia and Taste of Nova Scotia members were invited to submit up to three commercially available grape wines with 100 per cent Nova Scotia content.

“The Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Nova Scotia Wines recognizes the significance and contribution of the wine industry to our province,” said Emily Haynes, executive director of Taste of Nova Scotia. “Our local wines are shaped by our land and our sea. They represent our passion, our pride of place and our terroir. This award brings recognition to achievements and innovation in the Nova Scotia wine industry and celebrates the accomplishments of our farmers, winemakers and agricultural communities.”

“The emergence of Nova Scotia as a world-class wine region, producing wines of distinctive character and high quality, is a source of great pride for Nova Scotians”, said Jerry White, executive director of the Winery Association of Nova Scotia.  “The Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for Excellence in Nova Scotia Wines recognizes the tremendous accomplishments of our winemakers and we are honoured by the support these awards provide in helping to establish Nova Scotia as a top culinary tourism destination.”

The award ceremony included the presentation of a certificate and gold medal to each winning winery.
