What’s Cooking? September 9 – September 15
The days are getting shorter and the weather is getting colder, but that won’t stop us from exploring the hidden gems of our province! Keep reading to find out what’s cooking this week in Nova Scotia.
September 13: Rum Running Stories & Tastings
Join award-winning mixologist and history buff, Shane Beehan at Ironworks Distillery for an evening of storytelling and rum tasting. Sample a selection of his rum cocktails while he entertains you with age-old stories of South Shore rum runners. This event runs from 7:00 – 8:30 pm and takes place in the Quarrie Room – Ironworks’ new production and barrel aging area. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased here.
September 13: Six Course Dinner at Mosher House
In the comfort of an early 1800’s farmhouse overlooking Avondale Sky’s vineyard, enjoy a six-course blind tasting menu prepared by Chef Justin Floyd. Wine pairings thoughtfully selected for each course are available to perfectly complement your meal. A selection of our wines, local craft beers and ciders, and non-alcoholic options will also be available. Tickets are $80 plus tax.
September 13: Festival of Honey
Local honey stars in this new class at The Flying Apron that coincides with the Honey Harvest Festival at Newport Landing on Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Hands-on class and accommodations package: $355+HST/2 people (Friday, September 13th – Saturday, September 14th). This package includes: two hands-on class registrations, dinner on Friday (in your class), accommodations and breakfast.
September 15: Women of Wine Social
Calling all Halifax wine women! Obladee Wine Bar is hosting Femmes Du Vin, an event designed to celebrate, empower and educate women in the wine and hospitality industry. This Sunday, stop by between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 pm to meet the founder of Femmes Du Vin and master sommelier, Emily Pearce-Bibona. Enjoy exceptional live music while tasting more than 40 wines crafted by those that support the Femmes Du Vin movement. You’ll have the opportunity to mingle with women in wine from Nova Scotia, Benjamin Bridge and Lightfoot and Wolfville.
September 15: Open Farm Day
Take this opportunity to meet local farmers and producers from all over Nova Scotia and get the inside scoop on how they grow and raise delicious food. Taste of Nova Scotia participating members include: Sugar Moon Farm, Meander River Farm, Grand Pre Wines and many more!
Renée Lavallée at Sugar Moon Farm (September 20): Join Renée Lavallée, Top Chef contender & owner of The Canteen as she presents a seasonal maple-inspired dinner with Nova Scotia wines at Sugar Moon Farm. Tickets available here.
Avondale Garlic Festival (September 21): Mark your calendars for the 7th annual Avondale Garlic Fest on Saturday, September 21st! Celebrate Nova Scotia’s garlic growers while enjoying live music, fine art, great food, cooking demos and more at Eastern Canada’s largest garlic festival, all happening on the picturesque Avondale Sky Winery grounds.
Fall Harvest Port & Chocolate Tasting (September 28): Saint-Famille Wines is celebrating the fall harvest by featuring their award-winning Kingsport paired with gourmet chocolates. This event will feature live music by Roland Smith from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
German Classics (September 28): The Flying Apron is kicking off their Oktoberfest week with a new German class. Chef Chris will create this delicious meal featuring some classic dishes from his homeland. The demo class runs from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. and costs $70+HST/person. Reservations required.
Harvest Festival (October 12): Experience the fruits of the Jost Vineyards harvest! Their cornucopia of wine tastings and harvest-inspired food pairings is autumn at its finest. Enjoy wine tastings, live music on the patio, a special festival menu featuring harvest-inspired food from their Seagrape Café, wine sales and more.
Wild Caraway at Sugar Moon (October 18): Wild Caraway is the restaurant in Advocate Harbour that you’ve always wanted to visit. Here’s your chance! Sarah and Andrew will present a multi-course menu at Sugar Moon Farm based on the ingredients available in their region during that season. The menu won’t be available til closer to the event. This dinner tends to sell out early. Dinner tickets are $75. Wine pairing is $25 (3 pairings). 15 per cent gratuity and HST additional.
Raging Crow Distillery’s Anniversary Celebration (October 19): Join in the festivities for Raging Crow Distillery’s first birthday at their open house on Saturday, October 19th from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Celebrate by trying a sip of their infamous dill pickle vodka.
Spirited Away in Lunenburg (October 25-27): A weekend celebration of Nova Scotia Craft Spirit Distillers and the cocktails we create with them! Events, workshops, gala and food to be enjoyed.
