Meet Joshua Counsil (furthest right in photo above), the co-founder and co-owner of Good Robot Brewing Company, a company with a vested interest and an insatiable passion in seeing Atlantic Canada succeed in the beverage industry. Good Robot is one of the leaders in pushing Atlantic Canada to become one of the world’s hotspot destinations for alcohol. Their creative products take new risks and provide interesting new takes on beer while promoting equality and good times for all.
The first thing to know about Good Robot is that it’s a place for comradery; a place where people can sit down and truly connect in a world that’s continuously moving into a more technology-driven future. They want to be seen as an escape from all the worries and struggles that come with life. In fact, that was the entire reason the company started in the first place. It began with three engineers who felt like the modern world was moving away from the idea of passion and real human connections. In an attempt to keep this sense of comradery, Good Robot Brewing Company was born. Little did those three engineers know, Good Robot was soon going to blossom into one of Nova Scotia’s most beloved brewing companies.

Good Robot Brewing carries on the idea of humanity into the products they create. For example, the Thembot Sour beer was created to celebrate our friends within the LGBTQIA2S+ community. It also created a sense of equality within the business. No one was going to be judged or looked down upon based on their lifestyle choices, a mindset Josh and his team are extremely proud to hold and emphasize. Everyone is welcome at Good Robot; especially those who may feel outcast or alienated from the world. They want to focus on lifting everyone up and will continue to develop products that cater to those who desire a true sense of belonging.
Another popular Good Robot offering is their Tropical Storm IPA, a brand of beer with four different products; the only difference is the percentage of alcohol. The 4 types are category four, five, six, and seven, and each number correlates to the percentage of alcohol contained within the beverage. This accomplished two things. The first being that there’s a beer for everyone’s alcohol preference. The second was that it provided Good Robot with valuable data on what type of beer Nova Scotians like. With this information, they can keep creating beers that cater specifically to this province’s tongue. A great example would be the brand-new light beer Good Robot created called Ultra. The idea behind Ultra was to provide a high-quality light beer that was low on calories, but high in taste. Josh says that this release could prove to be risky, but that’s something Good Robot is familiar with.

Something to admire about Good Robot are the risks they are willing to take and their efforts to push forward the world of alcohol. That’s something that Josh says he loves about being a local business from Nova Scotia. Creativity is valued within Good Robot. They can afford to take risks that big companies won’t. They can afford to release a light beer like Ultra because they are confident in their own abilities to make quality products that people will enjoy. Josh pointed out that one of the curses of success is that you can find yourself doing the same thing over and over again. This isn’t the case at Good Robot; they are always trying to innovate and come up with new, interesting ideas that pushes the idea of brewing further than once thought.

This philosophy doesn’t stop at the brewery. Good Robot prides themselves on the events and experiences held at their taprooms. These taprooms provide a place of comfort, where friends and families can get together to share couple laughs between one another. Whether it be their stand-up comedy nights every Thursday, DJ nights, or even Tarot Card readings, there’s always something of interest taking place at the Good Robot taprooms.
Josh and the Good Robot Brewing team keep moving forward, creating new products that challenge pre-conceived notions about Nova Scotia’s craft beer industry. They pride themselves on their inclusivity for all, and their climb to make Atlantic Canada a premium destination for unique brews not found elsewhere in the world. Their quirky drinks are brewed for their dedicated community who hold Good Robot to a higher standard than most breweries. Congratulations to the entire Good Robot team for all the success they’ve produced.
