Stories Worth Writing About
By: Chris & Jane
We couldn’t think of a more ideal setting for dinner on a crisp early spring evening than the cozy dining room of an historic inn in downtown Halifax. That’s what we found at Stories Casual Fine Dining at the Halliburton.
Stories boasts of fine dining in a casual setting and that is what it delivered in spades. The atmosphere was complimented by fantastic service. Our waiter, Neil, expertly enhanced the atmosphere by providing us with great tips on wine, menu recommendations and tidbits of information about the many local selections available.
Jane started off with a salad – organic greens, warm goat cheese, spiced pecans, and apple complimented by a black currant vinaigrette. Chris, has never met a crab cake he didn’t like and could not help but try the Stories’ version accompanied by avocado and smoked paprika lime aioli. Both were great, but the moist and flavourful crab cakes truly stood out as one of the best appetizers either of us has ever had.
For our mains, Jane opted for the Grilled Nova Scotia Grass-fed Beef Striploin with bleu d’elizabeth potato gratin and Chris decided on the Bison Hanger Steak with boar sausage. Both were excellent – the bison was succulent, full of flavour and prepared to perfection; the generously proportioned steak was every bit as delicious and the potato gratin proved a perfect, and, filling compliment.
Somehow, we both found the room to cap off our diner with a selection from the dessert menu; Jane chose the Blackberry Brown Butter Tart and Chris selected the flourless Belgian Chocolate Cake. Neither disappointed the sweet tooth – leaving us both feeling happy and capping off a great meal perfectly.
If this sounds too good to be true and you’ve assumed that this evening must be out of your price range, consider this – Stories is offering an open menu option where guests can enjoy a three-course meal for $45 per person until the end of April. That’s a delicious price for a truly memorable dining experience at one of Halifax’s best kept secrets!
