Blue Nose Marathon Weekend at a Glance
Whether you’re a runner or enthusiastic spectator, there is no denying the energy that the Blue Nose Marathon brings to Halifax each year. Currently in its’ 20th year, the 2023 marathon will bring roughly 4000 marathoners and their families to the city for six running events spanning the Victoria Day weekend; a 5km, 10km, half marathon, full marathon, marathon team relay, and youth run (2km and 4km). Aside from the races, the Blue Nose brings with it a weekend full of events, including two healthy living expos at the Zatzman Sportsplex in Dartmouth where you’ll find Benjamin Bridge giving away complimentary cans of Piquette Zero (you’ll also find them at the Emera Oval!). There’s also an opening concert at the Halifax Convention Centre, and the Garrison Finished’er After Party on Sunday evening at their seaport taproom. Still need inspiration for ways to explore the city this marathon weekend? We’ve curated a list of must-see stops throughout Halifax and Dartmouth.
Pre Marathon Fuel
Food is fuel, and fuel is essential whether you are partaking in the marathon or cheering from the sidelines. Luckily, both Halifax and Dartmouth are bursting with pre-run worthy food spots to keep you going all day. Heartwood Restaurant has been nourishing Halifax for over 25 years with their carefully curated vegetarian menu. Known for their hearty Heartwood bowls, veggie burgers, and steamed greens, Heartwood offers wholesome and sustainable food options perfect for pre-race energy. Similarly, The Canteen in downtown Dartmouth offers light, seasonal fare such as bright summer salads and satiating sandwiches. Just minutes from the Alderney Ferry, this spot provides the perfect excuse to explore the city and treat yourself to a satisfying pre-run lunch. The Carleton is another great option, offering brunch on the weekends with options for pre-race fuel. Serving lox bagels, eggs Florentine, and vegan tartine, you’ll certainly find something to keep you satisfied and energized for the big day.
Post Marathon Cheers
What better way to acknowledge the accomplishment of completing the marathon than to say “cheers!” on a sunny waterfront patio or craft taproom. Luckily, the HRM has all of the above! On-site all weekend at the Emera Oval you’ll find Garrison Brewing Company pouring samples of their flagship beers. Their seaport taproom, location of the Garrison Finished’er After Party, and The Oxford Taproom will also be open all weekend. Offering waterfront views, Waterfront Warehouse boasts a generous patio and serves local beer, cider, and ready-to-drink cocktails. If wine is more your style, Obladee, A Wine Bar is a cosy, intimate bar offering a diverse wine list and curated seasonal menu. Across the Harbour, Lake City Cider has a dog-friendly patio with a view of Halifax and the Halifax Harbour. Their tap list features house-made ciders for every palate, and you can even bring your own snacks!
Mid Marathon Fun
One of the unique aspects of the Blue Nose Marathon weekend is that it features a youth run, providing an opportunity to engage the whole family. With this in mind, there are a number of family-friendly options for those looking to enjoy Halifax with their loved ones over the weekend. Delectable Desserts in Dartmouth, is a family owned bakery specializing in cheesecakes, buttercream layer cakes, and mousse cakes. Their retail shop, open on Friday and Saturday this weekend, features a daily selection of mini cakes and breakfast goodies- the perfect treat to round out a successful run! As a bonus, Delectable Desserts products are also available at the cafés in the downtown Halifax Public Library. If a celebratory lunch is in order, Morris East Restaurant specializes in wood fired pizza and fresh pastas. Offering a seasonal menu and bright restaurant, this spot is the perfect setting for a family lunch. Additionally, Made with Local‘s Real Food Bars are a nourishing snack made with locally sourced ingredients and make a great source of energy for a pre or post-run snack. Lunch box friendly and gluten-free, these bars are a great snack for kids and parents alike!
