PRESS RELEASE: Capt. Kat’s Wins Best Lobster Roll

For Immediate Release

Barrington, February 8, 2018: Capt. Kat’s Lobster Shack of Barrington, Nova Scotia took first place in the first annual South Shore Lobster Crawl Lobster Roll Challenge held on February 8, 2018

Emceed by the Kilted Chef at White Point Beach Resort, the taste-off featured 10 entrants from restaurants along Nova Scotia’s Lighthouse Route, a panel of international judges, a throng of fans as well as Hell Bay Brewing Company’s Lobster Ale — the South Shorer — named for the lobster fishing boat that caught the lobster used in the making of the ale.
Second place honours went to Lane’s Privateer Inn of Liverpool. Atlantica Oak Island Resort & Conference Centre and Quarterdeck Beachside Villas & Grill tied for third place.
The South Shore Lobster Roll Challenge is part of a three-week festival known as the South Shore Lobster Crawl held during lobster season and featuring close to 60 lobster dishes, getaways, museum and gallery showings, shopping and sporting events from Peggy’s Cove to Barrington.
“This is really about celebrating the lobster industry here on the south shore of Nova Scotia,” says Donna Hatt, chair of the Nova Scotia South Shore Tourism Co-operative which has been the driving force behind the Lobster Crawl and other collaborative events to attract visitors to the south shore. “With 40 per cent of Canada’s lobster coming from zones 33 and 34 here on the south shore, lobster is deeply embedded in our culture, our history and our communities. It’s a natural thing for us to acknowledge and celebrate and the response up and down the shore has been incredible.”
The winner of the Lobster Roll Challenge was awarded with a uniquely designed plaque hand-carved by local artist Bruce Smith and will be featured in Saltscapes Magazine.
“We’re so proud of the team,” said Della Newell, owner of Capt Kat’s Lobster Shack.  “For us it’s about keeping it simple and using our local lobster.” She also credited Dan’s Ice Cream Shoppe, also in Barrington Nova Scotia, for designing the custom roll used in Capt. Kat’s signature lobster roll.
