BBQ Tip 4 – BBQ Sauce

It can be tempting to buy BBQ sauce, but why not exercise your culinary creativity and make your own?

The basics of a good homemade BBQ sauce include tomatoes, mustard powder, spices, Worcestershire sauce, something sour like vinegar or fruit juice (try: blueberry or cranberry) and a little sweetness, like sugar or maple syrup (we suggest: Acadian Maple or Sugar Moon).

We’ve got great local ingredients to play with – so consistency and flavour are up to you, as are the ingredients and measurement. Play around with products like the fresh, local strawberries in Chef Ray Bear’s recipe for Strawberry BBQ Sauce.

For a quicker option, you can try Bert’s International Sauce from  The Pork Shop or Acadian Maple Product‘s maple barbeque sauce.

Just remember, sugar burns so only apply BBQ during the last few minutes of grilling.
