Local Back-to-School Snacks

Lunch Bag with Snacks

It’s time to send the kids back to school with snacks in tow, so make sure their lunch bag is full of local goodies.  It’s the perfect way to ensure what your feeding your child is good for them and you’re supporting the local economy! Emily Haynes from Taste of Nova Scotia was on CTV Morning Live recently to talk about our members and some lunch box ideas. Click here to see the video.

In addition, here’s a list of yummy local snacks (some featured on the CTV segment above) to fill that lunch pail:

Apples

Apples from Noggins
The back-to-school staple when it comes to fruit has to be apples! With so many varieties and flavours to choose from you can change it up every week.  Avaliable almost all year round from Stirlings Fruit Farm, Scotian Gold, Masstown Market and Noggins Corner Farm.

Honey

Honeylicious Cinnamon Spread

Cornect Family Farm offers a wide variety of honey products but the one we’re suggesting is their HoneyLicious! Cinnamon Spread.  The perfect dip for some fresh apple slices.

Granola Bars

Made with Local Bars

Made with Local has a selection of four granola bars that are made with all local products! Try Blueberry Grunt, Peanut Butter Blondie, Sticky Squirrel or Choco-Berry Bliss (all bars contain nuts).

Jam

Haskap Jam

Whether it’s on cracker or a bun, you can never go wrong with jam! We suggest picking up a jar of Haskap jam for a twist on the traditional jam taste, or go for sweet with Tangled Garden’s Radiant Raspberry or Verbena Blue.

Gluten Free Granola

The perfect companion with Fox Hill Cheese House yogurt or all by itself, Schoolhouse Gluten Free Gourmet makes a granola loaded with flavour, high in protein, fiber, calcium, omega 3 fatty acids as well as essential vitamins and minerals.  They also have chocolate macaroons, brownies and ginger snaps!

Juice it!

Van Dyks Blueberry Juice

Made only from Canada Grade “A” Nova Scotian wild blueberries and no water, sugar or preservatives added; Van Dyk’s Wild Blueberry juice is perfect to drink straight, mix with other juices or to add into a smoothie!

Say Cheese

Fox Hill Cranberry Cheese

Cheese and crackers is a classic snack – but spice it up with cranberry cheddar or dill and chives havarti from Fox Hill Cheese House.

Dried Fruit

Dried Lightly Sweetened Cranberries

Terra Beata Cranberry Farm offers dried cranberries, blueberries, cherries and apples, all with less sugar than the competition – a great addition to school lunches.

Flaxflour

Valley Flax Flour

Grab a bag of Valley Flaxflour and cook up some back to school treats!  Recipes

Fresh Fruit & Veggies

Noggins Corner Farmers Market

Don’t forget about your local Farmers’ Markets to pick up fresh, local and in-season fruits and vegetables.

Coffee

Full Steam Coffee

This one is for all of the parents out there who wrangle together the house in the wee hours of the morning and make sure everyone gets to school on time – with all of their belongings.  You need a strong cup of caffeine! We recommend brew from Just Us! Coffee Roastery, Full Steam Coffee or Nova Coffee.
