Make Mothers Day Local!
This year, make Mother’s Day local! In Nova Scotia, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to gifting local artisan products and experiences, and Mother’s Day is no different! Whether mum is a home cook, preserves connoisseur, wine lover, or even enjoys the province’s restaurant scene, there is something for every taste. To make things easier for you, we’ve curated a list of some gift bundles and experiences we think would make the perfect gift of local.
Take-home Bundles
When life gets busy, sometimes the best way to celebrate is to enjoy the big occasions at home. Luckily, our lively artisan food and beverage industry makes gift giving easy. Obladee, A Wine Bar is offering thoughtfully curated wine and cheese gift boxes, which can be built without the wine so the edibles are the star of the show! If mum is a fan of Nova Scotian wine, Benjamin Bridge is also offering a Mother’s Day Gift Pack, which includes your choice of NV sparkling, branded glassware, and a bottle stopper.
Although not curated gift bundles, there are a number of Nova Scotian artisans who offer products that are matriarch-worthy. For example, Maritime Salt Makers of Canada make a decadent and indulgent sea truffle salt, perfect for chowders and other seafood dishes. Harvest and Wild also have pre-curated gift packs of preserves available for purchase, and Sunday Silence Coffee have brought back a cult classic just in time for the big day- the medium roast Fair Trade Costa Rican and Columbian blend. Visit each business’s website for information on ordering and shipping- don’t miss out!
Another great gift idea: Nova Scotia oysters! Buy them directly from Deon Oyster Company and Bay Enterprises Ltd., or pick some up from seafood retailers like Afishionado Fishmongers, Clearwater Seafoods Retail Stores, Evan’s Fresh Seafood & Restaurant, Fisherman’s Market and Masstown Market‘s Catch of the Bay Fresh Fish Market.
Culinary Experiences
If going out is more your style, what better way to celebrate the matriarchs in your life by treating them to Sunday brunch! There are several restaurants around the province offering a Mother’s Day brunch, including Five Fishermen, Morris East, Founder’s House , Lupin Dining & Pantry, Kiju’s Restaurant and Harbour City Bar & Grill. Each location is offering dynamic brunch menus with sweet and savoury options to suit her taste. Planters Ridge Winery is also offering a 2-hour brunch event, which could be followed by a wine tasting or stroll through the vineyard (added bonus: this location also offers take-home gift packages!).
Although not curated Mother’s Day experiences, many of Nova Scotia’s wineries are beginning to open their doors for the season. Wineries such as Gaspereau Vineyards, Mercator Vineyards, and Luckett Vineyards are open for the season and offer guided tasting experiences that give you the opportunity to explore lush vineyards whilst learning about the Nova Scotian wine industry. You can often bring picnics and enjoy some local snacks among the vines, too!
Be sure to check out the respective business websites for up-to-date information on reservations and menu offerings.
