Spring Starts at the Table

By mid-April, our patience for waiting on warm weather is pretty much gone. Spring might be dragging its feet, but that doesn’t mean we have to! There’s no better way to get into a new season than by switching up what’s on your plate, so this week we’re bringing you some fresh food and drink inspiration to get you started.


Celebrate Craft Brewing Month

Did you know that April is recognized as Craft Brewing Month in Nova Scotia? It’s the perfect time to shine the light on all of the amazing breweries we have across the province, who work hard year round to keep our pints full. Check out the list below to learn more about the local breweries that are a part of the Taste of Nova Scotia membership, so you can add them to your must-visit list!

Authentic Seacoast Company

Inspired by the character of the people who built Guysborough, Rare Bird Craft Beer carries on the legacy of Nicolas Denys, Atlantic Canada’s oldest brewer, dating back to 1659, by crafting small-batch beers with pure artesian water and no preservatives. Each brew captures the history, flavour, and coastal spirit of Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore.

 

 

 

Boxing Rock Brewing Company

Boxing Rock has been brewing legendary Nova Scotia craft beer on the South Shore since 2013, offering a wide variety of styles, both unique and traditional.  They they have a beer for everyone, even those of you who think you don’t like beer.

 

 

 

 

Church Brewing Company

Located in Wolfville, Church Brewing Co is a destination brewery, restaurant, and market known for their traditional Belgian and German-style ales and lagers, along with East Coast favourites. With a state-of-the-art brewhouse and cellar, they produce small-batch beers designed to showcase both craftsmanship and local flavour.

 

 

Coldstream Clear Distillery

Coldstream is a family owned and operated Nova Scotian beverage company rooted in community, memorable experiences, and exceptionally great-tasting drinks. Their Nova Scotia lager is brewed using local ingredients and traditional techniques, resulting in a crisp and refreshing beer.

 

 

 

 

Garrison Brewing Company

For over 25 years, Garrison has strived to create exceptional craft beer made with passion, hard work, and East Coast pride. Our brews are premium, distinctive, and always full of flavour; all crafted in Halifax’s historic and vibrant Seaport District.

 

 

 

 

Propeller Brewing Company

Propeller Brewing Company has been Halifax’s North End craft brewery for over 25 years. Propeller focuses on handcrafted, small-batch beer with time-honoured methods that produce distinct, full-bodied tastes and aromas.

 

 

 

 

Rudder’s Seafood Restaurant & Brewery

Rudder’s prides themselves in brewing full-bodied craft beer, using fresh malted barley, hops, spring water and top quality fermenting yeast.  Their high quality beer and ales are served unfiltered, naturally carbonated and contain no adjuncts or preservatives.

 

 

 

Saltbox Brewing Company

Like the building of a historical Saltbox house, brewing small batches of quality beer is a deeply rooted expression of heritage and craftmanship found in Nova Scotia. At Saltbox Brewing Company, we celebrate the development of the skills and artistry required to create fresh, full-flavoured beer for consumption by the local community.

 

 

 

Dark Sea Level Brewing BeerSea Level Brewing Company

From their farm to your glass – Sea Level Brewing, and the farming family at Millstone Harvest Brewhouse, are working together as Nova Scotia’s first estate brewery. A little off the beaten path, their brewhouse is surrounded by the lush acreage where they grow most of their malting barley, some hops, and other fruit inputs.

 

 

 

Schoolhouse Brewery

Located along the waterfront in the heart of downtown Windsor, Schoolhouse Brewery showcases their array of quality craft brews in a cheery, school-themed taproom. Keep your eyes peeled for the yellow pencil taps at many other great watering holes around the province. 

 

 

 

 

Shipwright Brewing Company

Crafted in historic Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Shipwright Brewing Company is Lunenburg’s first craft brewery, a toast to the shipbuilding heritage and shipwrights themselves past and present. Keeping tradition with the talented artisans of our town, they strive to offer a superior world-class product, crafted with pride and passion in small batches.  

 

 

 

Sober Island Brewing Company

Along the Eastern Shore, Sober Island Brewing crafts English-style ales using local ingredients wherever possible. Inspired by Oyster Stout, their flagship ale is brewed with whole, fresh Pristine Bay Oysters that give it a true taste of the sea.

 

 

 

 

Tatamagouche Brewing Co.

Tatamagouche Brewing Co. is a family-owned and operated craft brewery in the heart of Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia.  In 2014, they converted an old butcher shop into a community brewery and tap room, focusing on fresh approaches to craft beer, while honouring the traditions of beer from around the world.

Planter’s Ridge Winery Brunch Boards

Nothing can beat a good weekend brunch, and Planter’s Ridge does it well! Their Brunch Board features some delicious offerings, including veggie strata, charcuterie strata, pumpkin waffles, aged cheddar & herbed waffles, and all the perfect little fixings to tie it together. Pair it with a mimosa flight and enjoy with your favourite people. What better way to start a spring morning?
Brunch is served every Friday, Saturday & Sunday, and their full regular menu is always available too.

Learn to Cook at The Flying Apron Inn & Cookery

If you were hoping to kick off spring by freshening up your cooking skills, then you’re in luck! The Flying Apron in Summerville has some availability left for their beloved Cooking Classes & Packages for the month of May. Choose from a variety of themed classes, where you and a partner/friend will learn to cook a meal, led by a professional chef. Afterwards, you can spend the night at their beautiful inn, with complimentary breakfast in the morning.
